Petition zur Teilnahme an der Internationalen Geowissenschaftsolympiade 2025
Mein Name ist Junzhe Yao, ich bin 16 Jahre alt, besuche ein Gymnasium in Königswinter und habe beim nationalen Auswahlwettbewerb für die Internationale Geowissenschaftsolympiade (IESO) den zweiten Platz deutschlandweit erreicht. Ich war bereits für das deutsche Nationalteam nominiert – bis ich zwei Monate vor dem Wettbewerb plötzlich ausgeschlossen wurde.
Der Grund? Ich habe einen chinesischen Pass.
Ich bin in Deutschland aufgewachsen – seit dem Kindergarten. Ich habe das deutsche Schulsystem durchlaufen, bin stellvertretender Bezirksschülersprecher, engagiere mich in der Schülervertretung und habe Deutschland in unzähligen Wettbewerben vertreten. Ich bin ein Teil dieser Gesellschaft. Doch nun soll all das nichts mehr zählen?
Die Regel zur Staatsbürgerschaft wurde mir nie vorher kommuniziert – weder beim Wettbewerb noch bei der Nominierung. Erst nach monatelanger intensiver Vorbereitung wurde mir gesagt: Du darfst nicht teilnehmen.
Ich habe mich mit Leidenschaft vorbereitet, viel Zeit investiert – für ein Ziel, das jetzt ohne fairen Grund zunichtegemacht wurde.
Ich fordere:

Die Rücknahme der Entscheidung, mich vom IESO-Team auszuschließen.

Eine faire Behandlung aller Schüler*innen, die in Deutschland leben und lernen – unabhängig vom Pass.

Eine transparente Kommunikation solcher Ausschlusskriterien im Voraus.

My name is Junzhe Yao, I’m 16 years old and a high school student in Königswinter, Germany. I recently placed 2nd nationwide in the selection process for the International Earth Science Olympiad (IESO) and was nominated for Germany’s national team — until I was suddenly disqualified just two months before the competition.
Why? Because I have a Chinese passport.
I have lived in Germany since kindergarten, gone through the German school system, and serve as Vice District Student Representative. I’ve represented Germany in numerous academic competitions and contributed actively to school life. But now, all that is being ignored.
This citizenship rule was never communicated to me — not during the competition nor when I was selected for the team. After months of hard work and intense preparation, I was told I could no longer participate.
I am passionate about Earth sciences and invested a great deal of time preparing — all for a goal that has now been denied on grounds that are neither fair nor transparent.
I call for:

The reversal of the decision excluding me from Germany’s IESO team.

Equal opportunities for all students raised and educated in Germany — regardless of their passport.

Transparent communication of disqualification criteria from the start.
